Stanzas for explanation-


1.Explain with reference to the context one of the following extracts:


(a) how happy is he born or taught

      That serveth not another's will,

    Whose Armour is his honest thought,

And simple truth his utmost skill!


Ans. Reference to the context: These lines have been quated from the poem 'character of a happy life' composed by 'Sir Henry wotton'. In the present stanza, the poet tells us about the secret of a happy life. He says that some of the essential qualities of a happy man are freedom, honesty and truth.


Explanation: The man who does not have to act as others which is very happy. his life is virtuous with no ill will for anybody. He therefore, needs no protection .truth is his only talent .he needs no other talent. this is the gift of god which helps him to lead a happy and honourable life.



(b)whose passions not his master's are,

Whose soul is still prepared for death;

United unto the world with care

Of principly love or vulgar breath.

Continuing his description of a happy man, the poet points out some qualities essential for a happy life: a happy person has self control. he is not interested in worldly things.


Explanation: Anger or love do not control his actions. He may be Angery,or he may be in love but he always behaves calmly as usual. His temper is balanced. Death has no faer for him. He is always ready to embrace it. He is not attached to the world.He does not pay any heed to love from great men or to the criticism that common feelings do not touch him at all.The life of such a man is sure to be happy.

Whose conscience is his strong retreat;

Whose state can neither flatterers feed,

Nor ruin make oppressors great.

The poet points out some qualities which are essential for a happy life. He is so strong that nothing can touch him.


Explanation: The happy man is above rumours.he is not influenced by them. if he has to face a position of danger or difficulty he is protected and guided by his conscience. his mind is always balanced. flattery does not feel him with vanity and when he is and he is not so sad that his enemies may feel victorious.


(d)This man is free from servile bands of hope to rise, or fear to fall;

 lord of himself, thought not of lands; And having nothing, he hath all.

 The poet suggest how a man can lead a happy life. He should he be honest. he gives up passion. he is free from rumours.He envies none. he prays god everyday.


Explanation: A happy man is free from chains of slavery. he does not entertain the hope to rise. he has no fear to fall.he possesses self-control, though he has no material possessions. he does not have worldly things, but he has all the qualities of good life.
