The Ball Poem

Before you read - A boy loses a ball. He is very upset. A bal does not cost much, nor is it difficult to buy another ball. Why then is the boy so upset ? Read the poems to see what the poet things has been lost, and what the boy has to learn from the experience of losing something.
पढ़ने से पहले - यह लड़का अपनी गेंद खो देता है। वह बहुत व्यथित है। गेंद की कीमत अधिक नहीं है, ना ही दूसरी गेंद को खरीदना मुश्किल है। तब वह लड़का इतना व्यथित क्यों है? यह कविता पढ़ते वक्त देखिए कि कवि क्या सोचता है कि खो गया और किसी वस्तु के खो जाने के अनुभव के आधार पर उस लड़के को क्या सीख लेनी चाहिए।

What is the boy now, who has lost his ball ,
What,what is he do ? I saw it go
Merrily bouncing, down the street, and then
Merrily over - there it is in the water!
No use to say 'O there are other balls ' :
An ultimate shaking grief fixes the boy
As he stands rigid, trembling staring down
All is young days into the harbour where
His ball went. I would not intrude on him ;

हिंदी अनुवाद - कवि इस कविता के माध्यम से कहता है कि जिस बच्चे की गेंद खो गई है, उसका क्या हाल है ? उसे क्या करना चाहिए ? मैंने देखा कि कैसे वे खुशी-खुशी गेंद को उछालता हुआ सड़क से जा रहा था। वह खुश था कि अचानक उसके गेंद पानी में चली जाती है। वह सोचता है कि उस लड़के से यह कहने का भी कोई फायदा नहीं है कि, "कोई बात नहीं, और दूसरी गेंदे भी तो हैं।" उस लड़के के चेहरे पर मायूसी छा जाती है। वह ठगा-सा खड़ा ही रह जाता है और नीचे पानी को घूमता ही रहता है कवि अपने बचपन के दिनों को याद करता है कि जाने कितनी बार वह बंदरगाह से उसकी गेंद खोई है वह सोचता है कि वह बेवजह दखल अंदाजी नहीं करेगा।

And no one buys a ball back. Money is a external.
He is learning, well behind his desperate eyes,
The epistemology of loss, how to stand up
Knowing what every man must one day know
And most know many days, how to stand.

हिंदी अनुवाद - दूसरी गेंद 10 पैसे की आएगी, लेकिन वह लेना बेकार ही होगा। अब कवि गेंद की तुलना सांसारिक वस्तुओं से करता है। अब वह सोचता है कि अब उसे अपनी दुनिया को सांसारिक वस्तुओं के प्रति जिम्मेदारी समझनी होगी। लोग गेंद लेते रहेंगे। और गेंदे हमेशा खोती ही रहेंगे। कवि उस छोटे लड़के की दशा देखकर सोचता है कि कोई भी खोई हुई गेंद को दोबारा नहीं खरीद पाता। पैसा एक बाहरी वस्तु है। गेंद के खो जाने से वह लड़का इस क्षति को सहनशीलता और प्रसन्नता के साथ सीख जाएगा। वह इस बात को सीख जाएगा कि हर इंसान को इस संसार में अपना कुछ ना कुछ खोना पड़ता है, और उसे यह सब सहन करके अपने दायित्वों को पूरा करना पड़ता है और फिर से नए सिरे से जिंदगी जीनी पड़ती है।
Central idea of the poem
The poet describe the brief of a boy over the loss of his ball. In the beginning it shows the normal reaction of a child. But later on the ball seems to be symbolising the materialistic things in the world. Like,we should not cling to the wordly pessessions all our life. We have to accept the changes in life, we have to move on.Time and life, both are precious. It teaches us to learn to accept and let the things we can never have .
Question Answer –
1. Why does the poet say,"I would not intrude on him" ? Why does not he offer him money to buy another ball ?
Ans. The poet does not went to intrude because he knows that little boy has to learn to accept the loss and he wanted to give the change to the boy to learn real truth of life. The loss, means loss of something important are someone special .
2."... Staring down/All young days into the harbour where/his Ball went…" do you think that day has had the ball for a long time ? Is it linked to the memories of days when he played with it ?
Ans. Yes, I fell that the boy had the ball for a very long time.The line itself describe that the boy ie, the poet himself recalls his childhood days at the harbour,
When he used to play with the ball. The ball is surely linked to the sweet memories of those days.
3. What does "in the world of possessions" mean ?
Ans. "In the world of possessions" means that the world is full of materialistic things, the things which bring joy, comfort in luxury in our life.
4. Do you think the boy has lost anything earlier ? Pick out the world that suggest the answer .
Ans. The line in the poem "now he senses his first responsibility" shows that the boy has not lost anything earlier.
5. What does the poet say the boy is learning from the loss of the ball ? Try to explain this in your own words.
Ans. The poet says that the boy will now learn the real meaning of life. He will learn to accept the changes in life and let go the things we can never have again. He will learn to move on in life despite of having losses as everyone has to experience this in his life. It can be a loss of something or someone. But life goes on. This age a harsh reality that lost things never come back so we have to be strong to accept this truth of life.
6. Have you ever lost something you liked very much ? Write a paragraph describing how you felt then, and saying whether – and how – you got over your loss.
Ans. Yes, I have lost many things like any other child. My father is in army, so I get the change to say at different places. One thing I don't like is, I lose my friends and my school. My father was once shifted to Delhi, so for my better education, first time I had to leave my village. The green fields, ponds, cows were part of my life there. Coming to Delhi. I missed my golden days spent in village. I will never be able to live there again. But now I understood that getting and losing things is the law of nature. This is what life us all about. Life teaches us a lesson. We have to learn to take gains and losses all our life. I take a little time to adjust but gradually I overcome my loss.
