Passage

[1] "Your brothers died because they did not heed my words. They tried to drink water without answering my questions. Do not follow them. Answer My questions first and then you can quench your thirst. This pool belongs to me". Did not take yudhishthira moment to understand that these could be none other than the words of a Yaksha and guessed what had happened to his brothers. It took him no time to see a possible way of bringing them back to life. He said to the bodiless voice: "please ask your questions".

Answer

1. This passage has been taken from the lesson 'The Enchanted Pool'. C Rajagopalachari is the author of this lesson.

2. Yaksha was the owner of the pool. The four brothers of Yudhisthira died because they did not heed the words of Yaksha.

[2] Thus, the Yaksha put many questions and answer them all. In the end, the Yaksha asked "O King, one of your dead brothers can now be revived. Who do you want to come back to life?"

It took Yudhisthira a moment to think and then he wished that the cloud-complexioned, Lotus-eyed, broad-chested and Long-armed Nakula, lying like a fallen ebony tree, might arise.
The Yaksha was pleased at this and asked Yudhisthira : "why did you choose Nakula in preference to Bhima, who was the strength of sixteen thousand elephants? I have heard that Bhima is most dear to you. And why not Arjuna, whose strength in arms is your protection? Tell me why you choose Nakula rather than either of these two."

Ans. In search of his brothers, Yudhisthira reached same pool. When he wanted to drink water, he also heard the same warning. His brothers were lying dead near the pool. But Yudhisthira answered all the questions of Yaksha. Yaksha was pleased by his answer. So he became ready to revive one of his brothers of his choice.

Yudhisthira choose Nakula, the son of Madri because he, the son of kunti was alive. So kunti was note completely bereaved. In order to keep the scales of justice even, he wanted to revive Madri's son Nakula. Thus, Yudhisthira's impartiality pleased the Yaksha most. So Yaksha rewarded him by reviving his all dead brothers.

3. Give a character sketch of Yudhisthira.

Ans.1. Eldest brother: Yudhisthira was the eldest of all the Pandavas brothers. They were five in all. They had been living in exile.

2. A loving brother: Yudhisthira loved his brother's most. When he saw them lying dead, he could not bear their separation. He cried loudly and mourned them.

3. Brave and intelligent:

Yudhisthira was brave to face any situation. He was very intelligent as well. He answered to all questions asked by Yaksha satisfactorily.

4. Lover of justice: Yudhisthir loved justice very much. So he choose Nakula to be revived. He did it so that the scales of justice might be even.

Or What qualities make a man a real 'Brahmana'?

Ans Birth and learning do not make one a Brahmana; good conduct alone does. However learned a person may be, he will not be a 'Brahmana' without giving up bad habits. Even though he may be learned in the four Vedas, a man of bad conduct falls to a lower class.

9. Whose sons were Nakula and sahdev?

Ans. Nakula and sahdev were the sons of Madri.

10. Who in reality was the Yaksha and why, did he come?

Ans. Yaksha was Yama and he come to see Yudhisthira and test him.
