Dusshera is a popular festival celebrated with joy all over India. It is an auspicious day signifying the victory of good over evil. This festival is also known as "Vijay Dashmi". Sanskrit word that utterly translate into "Dashahara" or "Remover of bad fate." It celebrates the triumph of "Dharma". The symbolic value of this festival is rooted in the Hindu epic Ramayana, according to which Lord Rama Killed Ravana, the king of Lanka as he had abducted Rama's wife Sita. Lord Rama is considered as a model of all the best qualities that a human being can possess. Along with his younger brother Lakshman their devotee Lord Hanuman and an army of gifted monkeys. Lord Rama fought with his army for 10 days. The day of the victory is called "Vijay Dashmi". This is also the reason why effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhakarna and son Meghnad are burnt in various parts of the country.

One day a little Indian girl was shut up in room alone for a whole day by her father because she would not learn English. The child was Sarojini who later known as Sarojini Naidu, became one of the most distinguished poets in the very language she had refused to learn.
Sarojini, like the rest of her family was educated in her early years under her father's own care. Her father wanted her to become a great mathematician or scientist, but she didn't like doing sums or conducting experiments. She loved to dream and write poems. She wrote her first poem when she was hardly eleven. At the age of thirteen she wrote a long poem in the manner of the famous English poets. In this way began her poetic career.
After passing the Matriculation Examination in India and before she was fifteen she went to England for higher education. It was during her stay in London that she met Sir Edmund Gosse, a distinguished man of letters of the time. He
was very impressed
by her knowledge, intelligence and learning. When he came to know from her that she wrote English verse, he asked her to show him some of her poems. (8 Marks)

A Surprise Birthday Party

Dear Diary,
Last week I had the best birthday surprise of my life. My mother had told me that since it was lockdown we would not go out anywhere so basically we would spend this birthday at home. But it wasn’t the case. I woke up on my birthday and saw the whole house decorated. Dad said that this was so that I felt happy at home. I had my breakfast and was playing with my gifts which my parents had bought me when I heard the doorbell. Mum told me to go and get ready as some relatives had come to wish me.
I went into my room to change and when I came into the living room I found all my friends were waiting. I was so delighted to see each of them. It was the surprise of my life. Everyone had even brought me gifts which were kept on the table. After that we cut the cake and everyone sang “Happy Birthday” for me. This was followed by lunch and some lovely snacks which mum had prepared.
I will be writing back soon to keep you updated on some of the wonderful gifts I have received. Till then bye.

My grandmother always went to school with me because the school was attached to the temple. The priest taught us the alphabet and the morning prayer. While the children sat in rows on either side of the verandah singing the alphabet or the prayers in chorus, my grandmother sat inside reading the scriptures, when we had both finished we would walk back together. This time the village dogs would meet us at the temple door. They followed us to our home growling and fighting with each other for the chapattis we throw to them.
When my parents were comfortably settled in the city, they sent for us, that was a turning point in our friendship. Although we shared the same room, my grandmother no longer came to school with me. I used to go to an English school in Motor bus. There were no dogs in the streets and she took to feeding sparrows in the country yard of our city house.
