Ans. Introduction: Antonio is the central figure of the play. from the beginning to the end of the play, we find Antonio everywhere. he is a rich merchant and the play is rightly named after him. Antonio is Christian.
Man of passive nature: Antonio is a main of passive or non aggressive nature. many a time, in the play we see his passiveness. In the beginning of the play, we can see Antonio melancholy, when he says:
" In sooth, I know not why I am so sad."
His hatred for shylock: Antonio hates shylock because he is a jew and lends money at high interest. Antonio calls him a dog.
A noble man: Antonio is a noble man. he is a simple hearted and generous by Nature. he is a true friend of bassanio. Antonio is always ready to help his friend. He lends money to all people without interest.
His weakness: Antonio hates all religions except Christianity.he is so simple that he fails to understand the tricks of shylock.he is also passive by nature.
In the end, we can say that Antonio sincerity and frankness of expression is really admirable. He is the man of hai character.

Ans. Introduction: bassanio is a Central figure in the the play.he is the friend of Antonio bassanio comes of a noble family.
His personality: bassanio is a master of charming personality.
Extravagant:bassanio is a very spend-thrift. his friends and servants like him because of his extravagance nature. he gives freely his best clothes to his servants. he also gives food and drinks to his friends and servant freely. He loves very much this lifestyle.
True friend: bassanio is a true and sincere friend of Antonio. he has great love and respect for him when portia asks about Antonio, bassanio speaks in a very lovingly manner:
" The dearest friend to me, the kindliest man".
at one place in the play, bassanio says to Antonio:
" Antonio, I would sacrifice, myself ,my wife, dear to me as life, and all the word to save you from this devil.
Intelligent: bassanio is an intelligent person. We can see he his intelligence in selecting the right casket by which he wins the hand of Portia.
we can see that bassanio is a noble man with cheerfull personality.

she plays an important role in the play The merchant of Venice.
Her personality: Portia has both masculine and feminine qualities. Sharp wit,intelligence, boldness, and sense of honour are her masculine qualities. And fitness modesty and loyalty are the feminine virtues. all these qualities are found in portia personality.
Her beauty: She is the most beautiful lady of the play.The prince of Morocco was very much impressed by Portia's beauty. And bassanio toO falls in love with her.
Her wit: Portia Plays an important role in the trial scene. In the court she delivers a beautiful speech on mercy. Portia changes the play into a comedy. she saved on the quality of mercy :
"The quality of mercy is not strained
it droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven"
Portia's actions and words in the trial scene clearly showsl the perfect reconciliation of justice along with Mircy.she also disguises herself as a lawyer and saves the life of Antonio.
Self-confident: Portia has self confident, through her self-confidence, she defeats shylock in the open court .
Dutiful: portia has a strong sense of duty and honour. She knows very well the secrets of the caskets but he does not tell anything to bassanio about it .
Portia is the sweetest heroine of the play. and he is a combination of beauty and intellect.
4. Why did shylock hate Antonio? give reasons.

Ans. Introduction: shylock is the most dominant character in the play 'The merchant of Venice.' shylock is a money lender and a rich jew of Venice.
A greedy person: shylock is a greedy person. when his daughter Jessica runs away with his gold, he laments more for his gold than for his daughter .
His hatred for Antonio: shylock hates Antonio because Antonio is a Christian.and Antonio lends money without interest Antonio calls him a cur and spits on his zaberdine.
Cunning and revengeful: s hylock is very cunning and revengeful. he lends money to Antonio with the spirit of Revenge.very cunningly he makes Antonio sign the bond.
what shylock wants is not money but blood. and he nearly succeeds, only a legal quibble turns the table against him.
psylocke may have been sinned against ever so much but he is not less sinning in the trial scene. Shylock is forced not only to give up his riches but also to turn Christian.
Conclusion: on the one hand there is love of his wife and daughter, his National Pride, his strength and determination, on the other his averice,his rapacity, his diabolical lust for the blood of a woman man.
5. How is the story of the rings connected with the plot of the play "The merchant of Venice'?

Ans. Introduction: vaise new offers the lawyer three thousand ducats as his fee. The lawyer refused to take fee he is not mercenary mind. he who is well satisfied is well paid and I am well paid.
Keepsake: bassanio presses the lawyer to accept something from them as keepsake, not as payment. Then the lawyer asks Antonio to give his gloves and asks bassanio to give the ring he was wearing. bassanio pretends that rings is a trifling thing. he would give him the most expensive ring available in Venice and when you ask was then you to let the lawyer have the ring . Gratiano carries the ring to the lawyer. at the same time the clerk persuaded gratiano to give his ring.
At Belmont: The lawyer is portia and the clerk is nerissa.while Antonio violent is being introduced by bassanio to Portia, nerissa loses no time in picking a quarrel with gratiano about her ring. likewise portia humiliates bassanio about her ring.
Conclusion: portia make Antonio surety to give the ring to bassanio and bid him keep it better than the other.
