Foundation laid in 19th century –

At that time there was British Raj in the country and at that time Bank of Kolkata came into existence. About 3 years after its establishment, the bank received its charter and came to be known as the Bank of Bengal on 2 January 1809. Considered a unique institution, it was the first United State Bank of British India sponsored by the Government of Bengal.

Bank of Kolkata was renamed as Bank of Bengal on 2 June 1806.
Later Bank of Madras (1843) and Bank of Bombay (1840) (Bank of Bombay) were formed.
On 27 January 1921, the three banks i.e. Bank of Calcutta, Bank of Bengal and Bank of Madras were merged to form the Imperial Bank of India.
An act was passed on July 1, 1955, which became the Imperial Bank of India. Under him in Parliament, it was named State Bank of India. That is, it was established on 1 July 1955.

This bank was established on 2 June 1806 as the Bank of Calcutta, which later became the Bank of Bengal on 2 January 1809. In 1921, the Bank of Bombay and the Bank of Madras merged with the Bank of Bengal, forming the Imperial Bank of India.
Bank of Bengal, Bank of Bombay and Bank of Madras, all three banks had private sector capital, but were opened to the East India Company. These three banks remained the major banks of modern India until they were merged with the Imperial Bank of India.
At first, private shareholding was held by Europeans, but later in 1823, all three banks were controlled by the government.

On 27 January 1921, Bank of Bengal, Bank of Bombay and Bank of Madras were merged to form Imperial Bank of India.
Changed again in independent India –
In independent India, the Imperial Bank was superseded by a Parliamentary Act of India in 1955, which was followed by the State Bank of India Act 1955. Imperial Bank was renamed as State Bank of India or State Bank of India on 30 April 1955. After this SBI was established on 1st July.
