Shook down on me 

The dust of Snow

From a hemlock tree

शुक डाउन औन मी

दी डस्ट आफ स्नो

            Has given my heart

            A change of mood

            And saved some part

            Of a day I had rued

हिंदी अनुवाद - सर्दी का मौसम है। कवि खिन्न है और वह सुस्त होकर धतूरे के पेड़ के नीचे बैठा है। धतूरे का पेड़ विषैला होता है वह बर्फ से ढका था। अचानक ही उस पर बैठे कौवे द्वारा कुछ हलचल होती है और बर्फ के छोटे-छोटे टुकड़े कवि के ऊपर गिर जाते हैं।


अब कवि कहता है कि वह खिन्न था पर जैसे ही बर्फ के टुकड़े उस पर गिरे अचानक उसका दिल खुश हो गया और इस छोटी सी घटना में उसका बाकी का दिन बर्बाद होने से बचा लिया। कवि ने इस कविता में यह संदेश दिया है कि प्रकृति बहुत उदास है उसके पास हमारी छोटी-छोटी समस्याओं को दूर करने की ताकत है।


Central idea of the Poem - It is a beautiful short poem that even a simple moment has a large significance in changing one's attitude. The poet appreciates the beauty of the snow flakes which changed his mood And saved many precious moments from being wasted.


Textual Exercises - 


This poem present a moment That seems simple but has a larger significance. (compare this other quotation from Robert Frost : "Always always a larger significance…a little thing touches a larger thing.")


1.What is a "dust of snow"? what does the poet say has changed his mood? how has the poet mood changed?


Ans - The dust of Snow means the fine particles of flakes of snow.

The sudden shower in the form of the dust of Snow changed the Poet's mood.

The Poet's mood changed from sad to happy. he felt refresh and wanted to enjoy the rest of the day.


2.How does Frost present nature in this poem? The following questions may help you to think of an answer.


(i). Where are the birds that are usually named in poem? Do you think a crow is often mentioned in poem ? what images come to your mind when you think of a crow?


Ans - Frost present nature in a very different manner in this poem.

generally poets take the birds which are known for their beauty and good qualities like parrots and peacocks.


No,crow is a hardly mentioned in the poem.


when we think of a crow the image of a black bird with harsh voice comes in our mind, which is believed to be a symbol of bed omen


(ii) Again, what is "a hemlock tree"? why does not the poet write about a more 'beautiful' trees such as a maple, or an oak, or a pine?


Ans -  A hemlock tree is a poisonous tree with small white flowers. the poet does not choose Maple,oak or Pine like beautiful trees instead he chooses the hemlock tree to present his mood and feelings.


(iii) What do the crow and hemlock represent –  joy or sorrow?

what does the dust of Snow that the crow shakes off a hemlock tree stand for?


Ans –  The crow and hemlock tree represent sorrow and depression felt by the poet in the materialitic world.

the dust of snow is the symbol of natural joy and energy.the death of Snow that the grow Shakes off hemlock tree means from the sad moment the poet is entering into the full time of optimism .


3. Have there been times when you felt depressed on hopeless? Have you experienced a similar moment that changed your mood that day ?


Ans - There have been innumerable times when I too have felt depressed and hopeless. I sometimes get upset by selfish behaviour of people and sometimes due to my own conduct. During the lockdown period. I took gardening as my hobby. Seeing the plants grow make me feel better. It helped me reduce my anger and stress.
